84 North Fulton Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

FULTON COUNTY, GA -- The Fulton County School System has announced that 84 students are semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These scholastically-talented high school seniors now continue in the national competition for 8,400 scholarships, a value of approximately $36 million.

This is the first round of competition for students seeking the distinction of being named a National Merit Scholar and receiving the scholarship money associated with it. Finalists will be named in the winter and the scholarship winners will be announced in the spring.

The students were identified through exceptionally high scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which they took as juniors.

As semifinalists, the students now must fulfill several requirements in order to advance to the finalist round.

Johns Creek to Host Household Hazardous Waste Workshop

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The Fulton County Public Works Department will host a free household hazardous waste workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The workshop will take place at the Ocee Branch Library (5090 Abbots Bridge Road, Johns Creek, 30005).

A typical home can contain many types of hazardous household products used for cleaning, painting, beautifying, lubricating and disinfecting the house, yard, workshop and garage. Chemical-based household products in a single home may seem insignificant, but when millions of homes across Georgia use similar products -- handling, storing and disposing of them improperly -- the combined effort can become a major problem.

The hazardous waste workshop will educate residents on how to use alternative household cleaners.

County Jobs for Fulton Residents

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners (BOC) approved the county’s first Job Source Policy, at its September 15 meeting.  By enacting this policy, the county will create a pool of employable Fulton county residents who would be eligible to fill jobs created by certain projects funded by the County.

“The Board of Commissioner feels that it is our responsibility to try and help the citizens of Fulton County as much as we can during these hard economic times. This policy will help to provide stable economic opportunities for families throughout the County” stated Fulton County Chairman John H. Eaves.

This policy will apply to all contracts procured through the Department of Purchasing & Contract Compliance valued in excess of $200,000.
