ATLANTA -- Over 10,000 Georgians will walk this weekend to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

The Accelerate the Cure Walk to Cure Diabetes, benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), will hold two Atlanta-area walks:

Saturday, Oct. 16
8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Centennial Olympic Park (265 Park Avenue West, Atlanta, 30313)

Sunday, Oct. 17
1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Technology Park/Johns Creek (12000 Findley Road, Johns Creek, 30097)

On average, 38 Georgia children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes each month. The disease is brought on through no fault of their own, and there is no cure.

This weekend's walkers will hope to "accelerate the cure" and remove the burden of the disease from the estimated three million Americans living with type 1 diabetes.

Charlie Kimball, the only licensed driver with diabetes in the Indy Racing League, will join the event on Saturday to cheer on walkers and sign autographs.

After the 5K walks, the fun will continue with family-friendly performances and activites, including a rock wall, bounce houses, a video gaming center and more.

With the support of its partners and families, JDRF expects to exceed $2 million for diabetes research, bringing them one step closer to finding the cure.

Pre-registration for the walk is free, highly recommended and can be done at the JDRF website.
