Alpharetta: Home to Tasty Adventures and Dining Delights

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Winter is officially upon us: the days are shorter, the air is brisk and Georgians are craving hearty and delicious meals that will chase away the chill.

Just south of the North Georgia Mountains and only 22 miles north of Atlanta is Alpharetta, offering over 150 dining options representing every cuisine imaginable, not to mention the state's only Publix Apron's Cooking School (4305 State Bridge Road, 30022).

Alpharetta restaurants feature a multitude of ethnic foods from the diverse cultures that call the city home. From authentic Mexican dishes at Pure Taqueria to meze and belly dancers at Café Efendi, hot pressed Cuban sandwiches at Mambo's to spicy basil chicken at Lime Juice Thai Bistro, there are lots of upscale options for those interested in more than just the traditional fare.

Innovative dishes are also plentiful in Alpharetta. At the award-winning Vinny's on Windward, tables are available near the open kitchen so diners can watch the creative chefs prepare their meals, like veal meatball gnocci with tomatoes, spinach and Asiago cream.

Ray's Killer Creek offers seasonal three-course dinners using the freshest product available with suggested wine pairings for each course.

Kids will love Smokejack, a barbeque joint where traditional and contemporary flavors are merged to showcase the best of American home-style cooking.

For the perfect dessert, take a sweet treats tour through Alpharetta. There's Coca-Cola cake at 52 Bistro, a passion fruit berry trifle at Atlantic Seafood Company and a chocolate and vanilla puzzle cake at Akini Sushi & Grill, all of which are sure to satisfy.

Those who prefer their desserts bite-sized can sample the signature handmade truffles at Schakolad Chocolate Factory and the chocolate-dipped strawberries from Godiva.

Vino 100 serves up some great dessert wines, not to mention frequent wine tastings.

The Publix Apron's Cooking School is perfect for those wishing to create their own meals. The school's Celebrity Chef classes features tutorials from famous professionals, such as Lauren Chattman, author of Cooking Swap, and José Garces, winner of "The Next Iron Chef." There are also classes for the younger set, where eight to 12 year olds can learn basic cooking techniques and good safety habits, while teens may learn how to prepare easy and healthy meals.

The Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau (178 South Main Street, 30009) is preparing to give away the perfect Alpharetta package, with a hotel stay at Staybridge Suites (3980 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta, 30005), a cooking class at Publix Apron's Cooking School, dinner for two at Ray's Killer Creek, a bottle of wine from Vino 100 and freshly made chocolate from Schakolad. Register to win at the CVB's Web site; the contest runs through the end of February, and the winner will be decided on March 1.

The 21st annual Taste of Alpharetta will be on Thursday, May 12 at Wills Park (1825 Old Milton Parkway, 30004). With music, a Kids Fun Zone, cooking competitions and samples from over 60 local restaurants, it's the city's premiere can't-miss event.
