JOHNS CREEK, GA -- Two school orchestras from Johns Creek were recently in the spotlight for their outstanding musical performances.

The Advanced Orchestra from Taylor Road Middle School performed at the Georgia Music Educators Assocation conference in Savannah on Thursday, Jan. 27. The group was one of only two Georgia middle school programs invited to participate.

The orchestra, which is under the direction of teacher Nicole Thompson, performed six selections, including a tribute to Dr. Michael Allen, an internationally-recognized music educator who recently lost a battle with cancer. Dr. Allen was co-author of "Essential Elements for Strings."

During the tribute, the middle school students teamed up with professional bassists to perform Dr. Allen's "Revenge of the Double Bass." Guest composer Carold Nuñez joined the orchestra for a performance of his piece, "M to the Third Power."

Timothy Aucoin, director of the orchestra program at Northview High School, also guest-conducted during the performance; the Advanced Orchestra played Aucoin's "Saint Charles Avenue Strut."

Aucoin is an accomplished bassist who has performed internationally with popular jazz groups. Under his direction, the Northview Chamber Orchestra performed at the 2010 Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra conference held in Chicago in December.

The invitiation from the Midwest Clinic helped bring national recognition to Northview's program; their orchestra was the featured performance group for the opening session of the National School Board Association conference, also in Chicago.

Selections from Northview's Midwest Clinic performance include classical works by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn, as well as more contemporary pieces from composers like Thad Jones and Richard Myers. The orchestra also played "Stringin' at the Juke Joint," Aucoin's new jazz composition.

The Chamber Orchestra has performed at Disney World, Universal Studios, local events, regional festivals and the Georgia Music Educators Association conference in 2004 and 2008. Northview students also represented Georgia in "Mozart 2006 -- a 250th Celebration" in Austria and the Czech Republic.
