SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Fulton County residents who need to have personal documents shredded for security purposes will have an alternative on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex will host a free and secure “Document Shredding” event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This event is the result of collaboration among Fulton County Government, Keep Sandy Springs Beautiful and Cintas Document Management.

Event planners have set a 10-box limit for each person; however, additional trips are welcomed. All of the shredded paper will be recycled.

Although the event is free, donations to benefit environmental programs offered by Keep Sandy Springs Beautiful are welcomed.

Veterans memorial to break ground

Veterans memorial to break ground

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- The Johns Creek Veterans Association will break ground on a memorial later this month.

The 4-acre Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk will be located in a quiet portion of Newtown Park. Construction will begin Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m.

"We don't have a memorial to our veterans in Johns Creek. The Veterans Memorial Walk will give people somewhere local to reflect on the service and sacrifice of America's men and women in uniform," JCVA president Gerry Lewis said in a statement. "It is not a place to celebrate war, but to provide our residents a place to honor the legacy of those who served and those currently serving."

The new memorial will contain a landscaped trail with black granite monuments for every major conflict since World War I. A brick entrance plaza will feature flags for each branch of service. Walking paths will lead to a gazebo.

Lewis said the goal is to have the memorial completed by Veterans Day 2014.
