JOHNS CREEK, GA -- Corporal Greg Whitaker, a member of the Johns Creek Police Department, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Mar. 2 following a short illness. He was 47.

"The JCPD has lost an outstanding police officer," said Police Chief Ed Densmore. "Greg Whitaker did his job professionally, had great rapport with his fellow officers and the community, and he never, never complained. He left us way too soon."

A native of Watkinsville, Georgia, Whitaker was a 23-year veteran of law enforcement who served in Uniform Patrol and was promoted from officer to corporal in January 2010.

Before coming to Johns Creek, he was part of the Fulton County Police Department, Cobb County Police, Oconee County Sheriff's Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and University of Georgia Police Department.

Whitaker held a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Becky, and two children.

The visitation will be Friday, Mar. 4 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home (1211 Jimmy Daniel Road, Bogart, 30622).

The funeral will be Saturday, Mar. 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Briarwood Baptist Church (1900 Robinhood Road, Watkinsville, 30677).

"Guns and Hoses," the Greg Whitaker Memorial Golf Tournament, has been set for Monday, Mar. 28 at St. Ives Country Club (1 Saint Ives Country Club Drive, Johns Creek, 30097).

A memorial fund in Whitaker's name has been set up at United Community Bank.
