Fulton County students excel at Grade 8 Writing Assessment

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Once again, students in Fulton County are excelling on state assessments.

With 91 percent of all students meeting or exceeding standards for the 2011 Grade 8 Writing Assessment, Fulton is four percentage points higher than the Metro Atlanta average and nine percentage points higher than the state.

"We have seen significant improvement over the past five years," said Superintendent Cindy Loe. "In 2007, our scores were around 80 percent, but have climbed to 91 percent. This achievement shows that our students and teachers have been working really hard to master the new language arts curriculum and improve their skills."

Twenty-two of Fulton's 23 middle schools have more than 80 percent of their students meeting or exceeding standards.

Seven of those schools have more than 95 percent of their students in this category:

* Autrey Mill, Johns Creek
* Fulton Science Academy, Alpharetta
* Haynes Bridge, Alpharetta
* Northwestern, Milton
* River Trail, Johns Creek
* Taylor Road, Johns Creek
* Webb Bridge, Alpharetta

Thirteen middle schools also showed impressive gains over the previous year's scores.

Three schools -- Holcomb Bridge (Alpharetta), McNair (College Park) and Sandy Springs -- saw increases of 10 percent or more of students meeting or exceeding standards, while five schools saw more than a 20 percent increase:

* Autrey Mill
* Fulton Science Academy
* Northwestern
* River Trail
* Webb Bridge

Five schools also showed great gains in the percentage of students exceeding standards:

* Amana Academy, Alpharetta
* Elkins Pointe, Roswell
* Fulton Science Academy
* Hapeville Charter
* River Trail

The Grade 8 Writing Assessment was administered in January and required students to write a composition on an assigned topic. This annual test provides students with a measurement of their writing performances and can help them identify areas that need improvement before they take the writing portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Test in high school.
