Nine Fulton County High Schools Named Best in Atlanta

FULTON COUNTY, GA -- Nine Fulton County high schools are ready to take their place in the spotlight after being named to Atlanta magazine's annual list of "Best High Schools."

The magazine compares awards, course offerings, extracurricular activities, facilities and national test performance. Results were reported across a broad spectrum of categories to include general academics, math, science, language arts, performing/visual arts and sports.

Additionally, the magazine compiled a list of "Top All-Around" achievers, which are schools that made the cut in all categories.

Fulton County School System Decides Make-Up Days

FULTON COUNTY, GA -- Due to last week's winter weather and school closures, the Fulton County School System will hold two instructional make-up days for students and teaching staff.

Additional make-up workdays will be held for county teachers.

The two make-up days for students will be Friday, Mar. 11 (originally scheduled as a teacher workday) and Friday, Apr. 22 (originally scheduled as a day off for both students and teachers).

To meet contract requirements, teachers will have a workday on Monday, Feb. 21, which was previously a student/teacher holiday, and will also work on Friday, Apr. 22. In addition, there will be two post-planning days on Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3.

State board of education rules allow "forgiveness" for up to four weather days during the school year.

FULTON COUNTY, GA -- Each member of the Fulton County Board of Education sponsors a monthly meeting open to all members of the community.

The sessions provide an opportunity for direct contact with community members and give board members a chance to listen to local issues and concerns.

Students Meet, Exceed Standards at 30 North Fulton Schools

FULTON COUNTY, GA -- Thirty North Fulton County schools were recently recognized by the Georgia Governor's Office of Student Achievement for meeting the office's high standards for public schools.

Awards were presented to the schools for reaching certain levels of the Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS), a mandate of the No Child Left Behind legislation.

Seven of the North Fulton schools earned the SSAS Bronze award, while the remaining schools earned the Silver (eight), Gold (nine) and Platinum (six) awards, all for Highest Performance.

The minimum requirements for Highest Performance revolved around a school's Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status and whether or not its student body meets and exceeds standards.

The qualifications for Highest Performance for each award are:

FULTON COUNTY, GA -- As of Tuesday, Jan. 4, applications are available for parents who wish to apply for a 2011-12 hardship transfer or to renew a current transfer to another Fulton County elementary, middle or high school.

Parents can use an online form, available under the "Parents" section of the Fulton County School System's Web site, to enter their information and print it to obtain signatures and/or supporting documentation.

Although using an online form will help expedite processing time, applications can also be picked up at all Fulton schools as well as the Fulton County Schools Administrative Center (786 Cleveland Avenue SW, Atlanta, 30315).

The deadline for submitting a transfer application is Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 4:30 p.m.

Nation's Top High School Basketball Players Coming to Alpharetta for 'Hoops in Overdrive'

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The third annual "Hoops in Overdrive" basketball tournament brings 28 teams, 150 Division 1 athletes and some of the nation's brightest talent to Centennial High School (9310 Scott Road, Alpharetta, 30022).

The three-day tournament will take place from Thursday, Dec. 30 to Saturday, Jan. 1 and will welcome the United States' consensus top rated high school senior, Austin Rivers of Winter Park High School in Winter Park, Florida.

The 6'5" Rivers is son of Boston Celtics head coach and NBA legend Doc Rivers.

Autrey Mill Middle School Cooks' Club Receives Windfall

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The Cooks' Club at Autrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek recently received a $2,000 kit containing safe, easy-to-use cookware that can be used by the school's "adopted" chef, Carlin Breinig, to empower teachers, parents and students to demonstrate healthy cooking.

The gift was granted through the auspices of the Partnership for a Healthier America and its honorary chairperson, First Lady Michelle Obama, to recognize Autrey Mill's efforts in promoting healthier lifestyles through participation in the Chefs Move! initiative.

Autrey Mill was selected for the award among schools leading America's charge to educate children about healthy eating and, in turn, to help meet the goal of curbing childhood obesity within a generation.
