Pike Nurseries to host gardening classes, sale

ATLANTA -- Fall, the prime planting season, is right around the corner, and Pike Nurseries has everything homeowners need to beautify their yards.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, all Pike locations in metro Atlanta will host a free fall gardening class. Nursery experts will take attendees through the process of picking out fall plants and caring for them.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is free to attend.

Pike's Gardenfest event, where customers can enjoy complimentary refreshments while surveying a variety of plants and yard decorations, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Much of the merchandise will be on sale during Gardenfest.

Fulton Fresh celebrates end of 2012 season

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension will celebrate the end of the second season of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, September 12th at the Shrine of the Black Madonna located at 946 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., SW, Atlanta, GA 30310 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am.  

Fulton County Cooperative Extension, in an effort to address health disparities, began the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market Program in 2011.  Fulton County residents living in “food deserts." areas with limited access to mainstream grocery stores, are able to get fresh vegetables and nutrition education from the Fulton Fresh mobile units.

In response to public demand, the program added an additional mobile unit to reach more communities.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market trucks delivered an estimated 8 tons of fresh produce to more than 1,800 residents living in 12 areas identified as food deserts.   In 2011, Fulton Fresh provided

Whole Foods, Ticket Alternative partner up

ATLANTA -- Whole Foods is making it easier than ever for customers to score tickets to their favorite events.

All eight metro Atlanta Whole Foods and Harry's Farmers Market locations are now outlets for Ticket Alternative. That means the grocery stores will sell tickets to events at some of the area's most popular venues, including the Fox Theatre, Eddie's Attic and the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater.

"Ticket Alternative's team members know our city, our community and our building," Allan Vella, general manger of the Fox Theatre, said in a statement. "They are able to answer our patrons' questions with first-hand knowledge and are the perfect fit to support our ticketing operations."

This coming weekend, Whole Foods will give away tickets to several upcoming events, including Taste of Atlanta, the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Two Drink Minimum at Theatrical Outfit.

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia is offering parents a tax holiday on back-to-school goods for the first time since 2009.

The state will temporarily suspend its collection of the sales tax on Aug. 10-11 for general school supplies, some clothing and computers and computer accessories.

Back to school tent sale at MyMy's Closet

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- MyMy's Closet will hold a tent sale just in time for the back-to-school shopping rush.

The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Abbotts Village Shopping Center.

Several items will be available for anywhere from $1 to $5, while all children's and maternity items will be anywhere from 10% to 50% off in the store.

A portion of proceeds from the tent sale will go to FOCUS, a non-profit organization that supports disabled and medically fragile children.

Georgia Watermelon Queen to Visit Fulton County’s Riverside Farmer’s Market in Roswell

Georgia Watermelon Queen to Visit Fulton County’s Riverside Farmer’s Market in Roswell

ROSWELL, Ga. -- The Georgia Watermelon Queen will visit the Riverside Farmer’s Market on Saturday, July 21 from 8:00am – 12:00pm.  Her visit is part of her official duties to welcome summer and to educate the community about the nutritional and economical value of watermelons.  Fulton County Cooperative Extension operates the Riverside Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning in the parking lot of Roswell City Hall located at 38 Hill Street in Roswell, Georgia. 

Laurel Higginbotham, the 2012 Watermelon Queen, will lead a fun-filled day for the entire family.  She will be handing out coloring books, promotional watermelon items as well as officiate watermelon eating and seed spitting contests.  A children’s tent, delicious made-to-order crepes, live music and a radon information table staffed by Fulton County Cooperative Extension Agents will add to the festivities.
